Is buying from Ice Yarns worth it?

If you’re a keen crocheter or knitter the chances are you’ve heard of Ice Yarns.

It’s a company based in Turkey that sells yarn, lots of it. If you go onto their website you’ll see what I mean, I have never seen so much yarn on sale in one place!

It takes a while to navigate the site, simply because there is so much to look at, but it’s not difficult.

The great thing about Ice Yarns? The yarn is cheap! You can get a skein of yarn for as little a 25p in the clearance section. The regular yarns are also really well priced, they have some beautiful yarns ranging from 99p a skein up to around £5.

The downside, if you would call it that, is that you can’t buy individual skeins, you have to buy packs, which range from packs of 2 up to packs of 8, but as most of us buy several of the same skein for projects I don’t really see that as a problem.

Now there are two camps for Ice Yarns, the people who love it and say even though the shipping is a little pricey, it’s still cheap overall. Then there are the people who say the shipping costs just don’t make buying from them worth it.

So I did a little experiment, I put an order in with Ice Yarns. The order total was £60.37, that was £42.32 for the yarn and £18.04 for shipping and handling. I’m based in the UK.

Ok, stay with me, cus I’m gonna break this down!

My order contained a total of  22 skeins of yarn, so dividing the order total by the number of skeins it works out at £2.74 a skein!

I had 3 packs of cake yarn (they come in packs of 2) and we all know yarn cakes are on the pricier side in most yarn stores, I had 3 packs of beautiful self striping yarn (each in packs of 4) and a just a regular solid acrylic (4 pack).

In my opinion that’s not bad at all, I think you’d be hard pressed to get 22 skeins including 6 yarn cakes for £60.

Overall, I do think it’s worth shopping with Ice Yarns, delivery only takes a few days and the yarn is great quality. As I’m based in the UK and these prices are based on UK shipping costs I can’t give an opinion on shipping rates to places like the US, but Ice Yarns has a lot of customers from the US so they must think its worth it.

Basically, it comes down to whether or not you mind paying a little extra for shipping in order to get cheaper yarn. Simple.

My advice? Visit the website, add some things to your basket, as shipping is based on weight, keep viewing your basket after every couple of additions and see how much you can order before the shipping cost jumps up. It may be you can order 5 packs of yarn for say £12 shipping, but add one more and it could jump up another few pounds, you might then decide to either remove that pack, or add more before the cost jumps again. It comes down to your budget.
